| No baptism record has yet been found for Thomas Lloyd, but fortunately his father's name is shown on Thomas's marriage certificate, so we know that he was definitely the son of Evan (carpenter) and Ann. It is just possible that he was the Thomas Lloyd who was baptised in Llanrhaiadr ym Mochnant on 6th May 1820. But although the mother was shown as Anne, the father was Thomas (Labourer). Could this have been a mistake made by the vicar? I think not, because there were other children to Thomas and Anne. He was much more likely to have been baptised at Llanfyllin, but I missed it.
Thomas was listed in the 1841 Census as having been a journeyman shoemaker aged 20 and living with John and Elizabeth Jones (both aged 45) in Waterfall Street ward. There were 3 Jones children in the house, namely John (aged 15), Jane (aged 15) and Evan, aged 13. Thomas's age in 1841 would imply that he was born in 1820 or 1821.
Thomas was a shoemaker aged 23 when he got married to Ann in April 1842 at the Tabernacle Chapel (Independent) in Llanrhaiadr ym Mochnant, Montgomeryshire, implying that he was born between April 1818 and April 1819.
His wife was a widow 11 years older than him.
Thomas's trade was given as shopkeeper on John's birth certificate dated 6th December 1842.
In the 1851 census he is shown as a shoemaker employing 5 men and aged 31, implying a birth date between April 1819 and March 1820.
Living in Church Street in the 1861 census, aged 44 and his wife 57, a master shoemaker employing 6 men and 2 boys.
His age was given as 51 in the 1871 census, implying that he was born in 1819 or 1820. He was living with his wife Anne (45) son John (8) and stepson Robert Jones (19).
In 1875, when his son John was married, his occupation was given as shopkeeper.
He was a master shoemaker at the time of the 1881 census, widowered and living in Church Street, Llanrhaiadr ym Mochnant.
He was aged 63 when he died in August 1881, implying that he was born between August 1817 and August 1818. His death was certified by John Lloyd, presumably his son. His tombstone is no longer in its original position, is written in Welsh and can be seen lying flat in one of 3 rows to the north of the churchyard,
Will entry described him as "Boot and Shoe Maker" proved at St Asaph by Robert Jones of 1 Repton St., Upper Brook Street, Manchester (accountant) and John Lloyd of Cheadle Hulme (Cashier) who were the executors. |
