When his children Richard, Joseph and Eliza were born, Joseph's occupation was shown to be that of a bricklayer and the family were living at the dock (ie Devonport). When Richard and Edwin died in 1826 and 1827, they were living in Tavistock Street, Devonport.
In 1841 he was aged 55 and a mason living in Devonport, Stoke Damerel, near Plymouth. His age is consistent with his having been born in 1787. His wife was named as Kitty in this census. She was shown to be aged 55, having been born in Devon.
At the time of the marriage of their son Joseph to Jane Jones in Charlton, Kent in 1847, Joseph's occupation is shown to be that of a stonemason.
In 1851 census he was aged 64 and was described as being a bricklayer, born in Stoke Damerel and living with wife Christiana (not Kitty as shown in 1841 census) and grandson Thomas George Frost aged 5, the son of Philip Frost, (shipwright).
In 1861 census, he was aged 74 and still living with his wife Christiana, aged 78 at 2 Granby Lane, Stoke Damerel. Her occupation was shown as dressmaker. Joseph's occupation was given as teacher - presumably of bricklaying!
According to his burial record, Joseph was aged 81 at the time of his death in 1867, and had been living at 7 Wellington Street, Stoke Damerel. However, I think that he must have been a mistake, because he was really aged 80 when he died-
