| Thomas Hugh/Hughes was a dyer by trade. He may have lived in Cross Street (which is mentioned in Elizabeth's baptismal record). [this suggests that he was probably the son of Roger Hewes (sic) as that was where Roger's son was born in 1653, which was the first year from which baptism records survived] There would appear to have been two Thomas Hugh(es), both having children at the same time. The other was described as a "tucker" whatever that is. One or more of the children may have been incorrectly assigned. The surname Hugh and Hughes would appear to have been used interchangeably, because Walter is shown as the son of Thomas Hugh. Only in the case of Mary is Thomas Hugh described as being a dyer, but see the notes for son Walter for the full text of the indenture dated 1710, in which both are described as having been dyers. |
