| According to Urlan Wannop, Ann Hetherington was born at Whitehill Farm, Walton, but the 1851 census states that her birthplace was Brampton.
I am assuming that she was the daughter of Richard and Ann Hetherington (baptism date according to the IGI.) Oddly enough, an Ann Hetherington was baptised on exactly the same date in Hayton by Brampton to Jane Hetherington, once again according to the IGI. It is odd that the Christian name Richard does not crop up among children, whereas Arthur does, so it is certainly possibly that I have the wrong parents for Ann.
(NOTE that there was an Ann Hetherington who was baptised at Walton on Jan 30th 1777. She was the daughter of Richard Hetherington and Mary Goodfellow . This baptism was two weeks after her father Richard had died, on Jan 15th 1777, so if these were her parents, she was an orphan as soon as she was born, but this baptism date is rather late based on other information about her age)
At the time of the 1841 census, Ann was said to have been aged 70.
At the time of the 1851 census of Longlands, she was widowed and aged 81 (sic) and shown as having been born in Brampton. She was living with her unmarried son, Thomas, who was aged 46 and was farming 129 acres. Also there was her unmarried daughter Eleanor (47) and unmarried son George (37) who was working as a farm labourer. They had a farm servant called William Routledge (29) and a house servant called Jane Dalton (29) from Kirklinton
Her gravestone can be found at Lanercost and shows that she was aged 87 rather than 88 when she died on 14th October 1854, implying that she was born in late 1776 or early 1777. |
