| James the son of William Southworth and Mary his wife in the parish of Dean, Horwich in the county of Lancaster born the ? February 1799 baptised 1st March 1799"
James was at Bolton Grammar School for Boys in 1808 (when he was enrolled) and in 1815 (when he would have been aged 16). His brother Ebenezer was down for the school, but I'm not sure that he actually went there.
James Southworth of this parish and Mary Townend Dixon of this parish were married in this church (ie Cheadle Parish Church) by license on 16th November 1836 by me S(?) Leigh, in the presence of George Dixon, Mary Southworth, Ebenezer Southworth and Joseph Slater" - entry No 368
In 1837, I believe that James Southworth was associated with a James Slater in the bleaching business, because they were mentioned together in relation to an extension of the patent granted to William Southworth. Perhaps James Slater was an uncle (ie brother to his mother Mary) or a cousin.
James Southworth has not definitely been located in the 1841 census - He was possibly the James Southworth who was living in Manchester, but in this case who was the Elizabeth Southworth who was living with him aged 79? This cannot have been his grandmother Elizabeth, because she would have been aged well over 90 by this time. In this census entry, the wife of this James was called Mary and was not born in Lancashire (which would be correct for Mary Townend Dixon), but Mary's age was given as 34, whereas she should only have been 26. Also shown in the 1841 census was a son James aged 2. James and Mary's oldest surviving son in Stockport was known to have been Harold (who was born in 1842) - so there could well have been others who did not survive, because they married in 1836. But in this case what were they doing in Manchester?
It is by no means certain that John and Mary Elizabeth were indeed children of James and Mary Southworth, although one might have expected them to have started a family sooner than 1842. The baptism or birth records would need to be checked to confirm this. Their birth dates are rather close together, so it is possible that only one of them was.
The much more likely possibility is that James Southworth and his wife Mary were in London at the time of the 1841 census, because both a James (40) and a Mary (25) Southworth were in King Street, Guildhall buildings, St Lawrence Jury. I'm not sure what this was, but it would appear to have been some sort of meeting for professionals and trades people. Note that in the 1841 census, ages were not precise - often to the nearest 5 years. James should have been 42 and Mary 27, which is accurate enough for the 1841 census. As they probably had no surviving children at this time, this idea is quite possible. James was the a manager of bleachworks in 1847 He was Manager of Sykes Bleach Works in 1857 The family lived at Edgeley Cottage or Edgeley Fold (now called Fold Cottage) in Cheadle Bulkeley.
In 1851 census, the family had servants called Ann Harrop and Ann Haydock. James was manager of the bleachworks and was living at Edgeley Fold, next door to Richard Sykes, who was the owner of the works. Richard Sykes occupied Edgeley House and was the grand-son of Martha Townend, a great aunt of James' wife. James Southworth's wife Mary T (ie Townend) Southworth. was aged 36, son Harold A. was 18 , daughter Margt E was 16, daughter Mary E was 14 and daughter Alice H was 1 (all children were born in Cheadle Bulkeley). Also living with them was James' sister Mary, who was aged 42 and was described as being an annuitant who had been born in Bolton.
In 1857 James was living in Grenville Street, Edgeley according to the Couet Directory (Mr J Southworth)
By 1860, he was living at Heath Bank,Cheadle, Stockport. I'm not sure exactly where this was, but probably in Cheadle Road, rather than Grenville Street.
In 1861 census - Frank Cheetham ("Ausin" b abt 1856 Rochdale - presumably this meant cousin) mentioned with niece Mary Cheetham (b abt 1825 Belton, Lancs). As Ebenezer lived in Rochdale, I suspect that Mary was her daughter and that she married a Mr Cheetham and they had a son Frank. Also present was a servant called Eliza Buller (who was born around1838 in Cheriton Heath)
In the 1871 census, James is still recorded as being "manager of bleach works", born in Horwich aged 72 and living in Cheadle Road, Cheadle Bulkeley. His wife (Mary T.) was by now aged 56 and was shown as having been born in Marple, Cheshire. Son Harold A was aged 28 and a "Cashier to Merchant". He and all of his siblings were born in Edgeley, Stockport. Margaret Eliz was aged 26, Mary E was aged 24 and an art student, Emily A was aged 19, Wm Jas was aged 15 and a scholar, as was Ebenezer Thos aged 12. There was one domestic servant Mary A Vaughan, aged 22 from Bouldon in Shropshire. A servant called Mary A Vaughan from Bouleen, Yorkshire was also mentioned.
Probate confirms his place and date of death. His estate was worth less that £3,000 |

| Thomas was still living in Horwich until at least 1835, because his children Hannah, Thomas and James were all born there.
In the 1841 census, Thomas was aged 35 and living with his wife Mary (30) at Spotland (Brocklebank), which is near Rochdale. Also living with them was a girl called Mary Thomason (9) and a servant Ellen Waddington (20).
In the 1851 census, Thomas (aged 45 and described as being a retired linen draper) and his wife Mary (aged 30) were living at Castleton, Rochdale. Living with them was Thomas's sister, Margaret Fraser (47) who had been widowed. All three of them are recorded as having been born in Bolton. Their servant Ellen Waddington (now 30 - from Helton, Yorks) was still living with them, together with Elizabeth Barrett (35), both unmarried.
Thomas helped to found Milton Congregational church in Rochdale in 1852
In the 1861 census Thomas (aged 55 and a retired draper) and Mary (aged 50) were still living in Castleton, Rochdale, with one house servant called Mary Oldham, who was aged 25, unmarried and from Hazel Grove.
In the 1871 census, Thomas (65) and Mary (60) had moved North Meols in the borough of Southport with two servants from Bolton, Mary Kitts (40) the housemaid and Ellen Kitts (60, the cook and presumably Mary's mother)
By the time of the 1881 census, Thomas, aged 75, was a widower, his wife Mary having died two years previously. But living with him now as housekeeper (crossed out!) was his spinster sister Mary, now aged 72
By 1891 Thomas was 85 and "living on his own devices(?)" at 56 Alexandra Road and still living with him was his sister Mary, now aged 82. Also staying with him were his unmarried stepsisters Emma (aged 61) and Martha (aged 54).
He died aged 88 in the second quarter of 1894 in the Ormskirk district (which I assume included North Meols). His death was recorded in "Annals of Rochdale" by Robert D. Mattley on page 168, where he was described as being "an old Rochdale draper" |

| Presumably it was this Mary who was a witness to James marriage in 1836, because this Mary Southworth could NOT have been James' mother, who must have died before 1818. This is when James's father William married his second wife Martha. But she could just possibly have been "Aunt Mary", the wife (or possibly the widow) of Uncle James.
Mary was living with brother Ebenezer at the time of the 1841 census (reportedly aged 30, although she would really have been 32), and no occupation was shown for her.
By the time of the 1851 census, she was aged 42 and living with her brother James in Edgeley, and was described as being an "annuitant"
In the 1861 census, she was aged 52 a spinster and an annuitant, visiting Henry and Helen Nolan(?) in St Leonards, Padiham with her neice Margaret Elizabeth Southworth (16) who was a scholar at the time. She was born in Bolton le Moors. Could Helen have been her sister?
I have yet to locate her in the 1871 census
In the 1881 and 1891 censuses, Mary was living with her brother Thomas at North Meols. Mary died in the Ormskirk distrivct in the 4th quarter of 1894, shortly after her brother Thomas.
The baptism of this Mary Southworth (she is believed to have been born in late 1808) has yet to be found, but it was presumably in the Bolton area. |

| Aged 57 at time of death in 1876, implying birth in 1829, which does not quite match. It is possible that he died in Stiockport in 1846 aged 19, but Sharples is more likely because this his where his parents were living. |

| Spool winder and a spinster in 1871, living with her mother in Sharples, Astley Bridge, Bolton (St Pauls) (oddly enough , in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses, her place of bith was shown as Bow, Essex!)
At the time of the 1891 census, Emma and her sister Martha were living with their stepbrother Thomas and sepsister Mary in North Meols, Southport. This census entry shows that she was born in Essex, so one has to wonder what her parents were doing there. |
