According to his birth certificate and the 1911 census, William was born at Swainsteads, which was a farm near Walton and Brampton in Cumberland.

At the time of the 1881 census, William (b Walton) was aged 19 and working as a draper. He was lodging at the George & Dragon Inn, Market Place, Brampton.

At the time of Audrey's birth in 1893, the family may have been living in Gateshead

In the 1901 census, William was aged 39 and a "Drapery Superintendent"

In the 1911 census, he was aged 47 and "Drapers Assistant" and living with his family at 70 Tavistock Road, Newcastle upon Tyne.

William became the Drapery Superintendent of Bainbridges in Newcastle-on-Tyne and worked there for 42 years. At the time Bainbridges was the biggest shop in Newcastle. He was in charge of security and was reportedly rather bitter about never having been made a partner in the firm. He wore morning dress to work.

William was very interested in butterflies, birds and gardening.
He was also fond of wildfowling (ie ducks at dawn) as a young man (taking his grandson Howard once I believe), he rode to hounds and also played bowls.
The couple later lived in a large house coming into Bamburgh from the West, with grounds on which 2 bungalows were later built. William was at the time living in digs in Newcastle during the week.
William and Catherine were buried in Bamburgh churchyard, which Peter and Christine and family visited once on a family holiday.
