| Mary was shown to be an "annuitant" aged 66 in the 1881census of Cheadle in the district of Stockport (Mary Townend Southworth, and born in Marple, Cheshire). Living with her were Harold Alfred (38) Cashier born in Cheadle Bulkeley Margaret Elizabeth (36) born in Cheadle Bulkeley Emily Ann (29) born in Cheadle Bulkeley William James (25) Commercial clerk - born in Cheadle Bulkeley Ebenezer Thomas (22) BA at Cambridge born in Cheadle Bulkeley There was one domestic servant - Margery Marchant aged 26 and born in Liverpool
She was recorded as a "widow" in the 1891 census - Mary T Southworth Lived at Heath Bank (7-9 Waverley Road) Cheadle Hume in both 1881 and 1891 (1891 reference 258 Page 39 Cheshire-Stockport-Cheadle 443 6B) She had two servants in 1891 - Martha Mills, a widow aged 60, and Martha Magueley aged 24 NB one of these servants was born in Llanrhaiader! a connection? Her will is at Cheshire Record office. She was aged 83 at the time of her death, by which time her son Harold Alfred (one of her executors) had predeceased her. Her death was registered at Stoclport in the first quarter of 1899, but I have yet to obtain the death certificate to establish the exact date of her death.
I Mary Townend Southworth of Heath Bank Edgeley in the county of Chester Widow declare this to be my last will. I give devise and bequeath all the real and personal property which shall belong to me at the time of my decease whether in possession reversion remainder or expectancy unto and to the use of my trustees hereinafter named their heirs executors administrators and assigns upon trust to sell my real estate (including therein leaseholds) by public auction or private contract together or in lots with power to make special or other conditions of sale as to title or evidence of title or otherwise and to buy in the premises at any sale by auction and to rescind either on terms or gratuitously any contract and to resell without being answerable for any loss to be occasioned thereby and to call in, realize and convert into money my personal estate and to stand and be possessed of the money arising from such sale calling in realization and conversion of my said real and personal estate upon trust for and to divided the same between all my children in equal shares. And I declare that if any of my children shall die in my lifetime leaving issue, any of whom shall be living at my death, such issue shall take equally amongst them if more than one the share which their respective parents would have taken if living at my death. I declare that the receipt or receipts of my said trustees or trustee for all monies and effects to be paid or delivered to them or him by virtue of this my will shall exonerate the person or persons taking the same from all liability to see to the application or disposition of the moneys or effects therein mentioned. I direct that all moneys payable to any married woman under or by virtue of this my will shall be paid into her own hands for her sole and separate use and that her receipt alone shall be sufficient discharge for the same. I devise all real estate vested in me as trustee or mortgagee unto and to the use of my said trustees their heirs and assigns subject to the trusts and equities affecting the same respectively. I appoint my sons Harold Alfred Southworth and William James Southworth trustees and executors of this my will. In witness whereof I have to this my will set my hand the 28th day of June one thousand eight hundred and seventy six - Mary Townend Southworth -- Signed by the said testratix Mary Townend Southworth as and for her last will and testament in the presence of us present at the same time who at her request in her sight and presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses -- Stewart C Geddes Clerk -- Francis Cheetham Medical Student. On the 15th February 1899 probate of this will was granted at Chester to William James Southworth the surviving executor |
