Will/Admon

John was a Carpenter and wheelwright, from whom most, if not all, the protestant Southworths of St Leonards, Samlesbury were descended. His will was made on 18th January 1671 and reads as follows:

No baptism record has been found for John, but he named his eldest son was Richard, so it is highly likely that his father also had this name, because this tradition was firmly adhered to in the Southworth family.
There were two possible Richards born in Samlesbury at about the right time - and there could of course have been several others.

The first Richard was the second son of a Henry Southworth, but this Henry also had a son called Adam and nowhere does the name Adam persist among John's descendants.

The other Richard belonged to the Manorial line and was born in about 1585, the 4th son of Thomas Southworth and Rosamund Lister. Richard was known to have been still living in 1603 and was left money in his grandfather's will. Richard's father Thomas was the son of Sir John Southworth (1517-1595). What is perhaps significant is that it was around this time that some of the Southworths moved from the Catholic faith to become devout Protestants. Indeed, it was from Thomas's 7th son Edward that the Southworth family that emigrated to the US is believed to have been descended. Thomas's 2nd son Thomas was reputed to have been one of the "Leyden pilgrims"

The big question is: is it really likely that Richard would have a son who would later become a carpenter. It is a bit improbable perhaps, but by this time the family was starting to fall on hard times and he was the fourth son. The pedigree for this Richard is taken from "A History of the Southworths of Samlesbury" by John (Jack) Southworth and Ann Dudgeon - privately published in 1994. My thanks to Ann and Jack's widow for supplying me with this information.
