We know that John Rees was Ann Rees's father because he is named on the certificate of her second marriage (to Thomas Lloyd) in 1842. His occupation was then shown to have been that of a butcher.

His 1845 death certificate records that he was a butcher aged 74, implying that he must have been born between November 1770 and October 1771. He died at the Corner Shop, Llanrhaiadr ym Mchnant, Denbigh. His age shown in the burial register was also 74, but I could not find a memorial stone for John Rees at St Dogmaels church when I visited in 2009

The age given on John's death certificate and in the burial register is more reliable than his 1841 census age (which was given as 65 rather than 70) , as it was provided by his son David Rees, so 1771 was John Rees' most likely birth year. According to 1841 census, John Rees was born in Montgomeryshire

John's surname was shown as Rees in the 1841census, but he had been called Rhys at time of his second marriage to Mary Roberts in 1802. The surnames Rice, Rhys, Rees and Rhees seem to be interchangeable!

There was a John Rhys born at Cefn Coch on 26th July 1766 to John (labourer) and Elizabeth Rhys, but these seems to be much too early for the John we are still looking for.

A John Rhys (weaver of Cefn Coch) was buried in Llanrhaiadr ym Mochnant on 29/4/1801 (aged 32, dying of decay) was presumably the John Rhees who was born to Humphrey (also a weaver) and Jane on 5th September 1768, also too early for "my" John Rhys.

I did wonder if this John might have been the John Rhees who married Elizabeth Davies in 1788 and then had three children (John, Jane and David) between 1789 and 1794. My reasoning is that it is perhaps unlikely that this John could have been widowed, married again (Mary Roberts) and then reused the names David and Jane for two of his children from his third marriage (to Catherine Owen). But he did not marry Catherine until 1819, and the David and Jane from his first marriage might have died by then (or before 1825 and 1832 respectively). However, there is no record of these deaths up until 1812 in the Llanrhaiadr ym Mochnant registers. His oldest son from his first marriage was named John, but he died aged just 3 in 1793, so it is not unreasonable for him to have given the same name to his his eldest son from his second marriage in 1803.

We know that the John Rhys who married Mary Roberts in 1802 was a widower at the time, so if he was not previously married to Elizabeth Roberts, another marriage would need to be found. Also, Elizabeth Davies would have to have died before 1802, and there is no such burial at Llanrhaiadr ym Mochnant.

Probably married to a different John Rhees, as the father of the three children was described as a weaver rather than a butcher, When I have discovered who 'my' John Rhees' first wife reall ywas, I will 'disconnect' this branch. I think that her husband H=John died in 1801 aged 32

Ann first married Robert Jones, but was widowed before marrying Thomas Lloyd in 1842.
She was shown on the marriage certificate as being a shopkeeper

In the 1871 census, her occupation was shown as "Mantuamaker" and that she was born in Llanrhaiadr ym Mochnant in Denbighshire

Her age on her marriage to Thomas was given optimistically as 34 in April 1842 (she must have been nearly 37!), 65 in 1871 census and 72 when she buried on 8th Jun 1878. Together these would indicate that she was born between June 9th 1805 and June 8th 1806. She was actually born on 6th June 1805 so was really just 73 when she died.

Her tombstone was written in Welsh and can be found in a row along the east wall of the churchyard.

The child of John Rees who was buried in 1815 was not given a name in the burial register. It is possible that it was actually George who was being buried, in which case it cannot of course have been him who survived until the 1841 census

I previously thought that he was the David Rees who was an apprentice saddler in 1841 and that it was he who was witness to his father's death in 1845. However, when a David Rees was buried on 4th May 1847 he was aged 22, which who suggest that this was this David Rees.
