| I originally thought that Mary Scholefield was baptised at Deane on 5th April 1768, but the Mary Southworth whose death (of dropsy) was registered on 5th August 1848 was the widow of James Southworth, bleacher of Red Bridge, Breightmet, and her age was given as being 67 and a half years (very precise!). She would thus have to have been born in early 1781. This is more likely, given that she was still apparently bearing children in 1825. If she had been born in 1768, she would have been 57 by then!
Although the IGI shows many possible Mary Scholefields, none of the baptism dates in the immediate vicinity are particularly good matches. Perhaps the best is 16th April 1780, at Bolton le Moors, the daughter of Adam Schofield and Ellen Walmsley. But this would have made her aged 68 when she died.
There was a Mary Scowfield baptised on 27th January 1782 at Horwich, the daughter of Thomas and Betty, but this is a year too late and the spelling is not so good. |
