| At the time of the 1881 census, Caroline was living at Stanley House, Clapton Road, Hackney. She was a widow with 5 children living with her, together with housemaids (Emily Helmer aged 36 from Harlkow in Essex and Sarah Goddard aged 23 from Thetford in Norfolk) and a cook (Eliza Wilson aged 31 from Danbury in Essex).
Visiting her was her sister Margaret Luke Ballance (nee Pollard), who was described as married and aged 37 from Taunton and her daughter (ie Caroline's niece) Margaret Heudebourck Ballance aged 4, described as having been born in Mild Eaton, Somerset (this should read Milverton of course). |

| Margaret Luke Pollard was born in Taunton in the second quarter of 1844
According to her Marriage record in the Western Daily Press, Margaret was the fourth daughter of Samuel K. Pollard, because Emily had died in 1842.
According to Betty, Margaret was not very nice to her daughter in law, Lily (ie Sydney's wife)
At the time of the 1911 census, Margaret was aged 67 and living at 32 Woodside Park Road, North Finchley. She was described as being a widow (although we know that she was not) and born in Taunton, Somerset. She had a 42 year old general servant from Bromsgrove with her, called Elizabeth Ashton, who was married and had a schoolgirl daughter Elsie, age 11. I believe that her son Sydney lived close by in the Barnet area, with his youngest daughter Mary Margaret Joan.
Margaret's death was registered in Hitchin.
She was living at the Old Vicarage in Willian, near Letchworth in Hertfordshire, at the time of her death.
She died of chronic nephritis and cerebral haemorrhage at the age of 82 years.
On her death certificate, she was described as being the widow of Alfred Charles Ballance (of independent means), whereas in fact he outlived her in New Zealand by a further seven years with his bigamous wife. |
