| John was described in 1779, when his son Thomas was baptised, as being a "Collier" of Samlesbury.
There appears to be no burial record for John that would at least be consistent with the family having moved to Horwich, where the three sons appeared to end up living. However, a John Southworth of Ribbleton was buried at Samlesbury on 1st January 1804, so this might have been him. But I do not have and age for him at the time of his death. His youngest child Mary was baptised at Samlesbury in 1789 at the age of 7, so he must presumably still have been alive then. I wonder why she was not baptised soon after birth.
The John Southworth who was buried at Salmesbury on 16th May 1814 was aged 73 and from Cuerdale, so was presumably a farmer. I would expect John and Elizabeth to have died in the vicinity of Horwich or Bolton.
[There is a 1793 burial record (10th March) of John, described as the son of Margaret Southworth, but he would have been aged 50 by this time and Margaret his mother would have been dead for almost 40 years, so it would have been a most unusual way to describe him] |
