| John was said to have been aged 31 at the time of his marriage license to Elizabeth Wordsworth in the parish of Sandal Magna - 11th December 1741 when he was described as being a "husbandman" of Walton. "John Townend and Elizabeth Wordsworth, both of this pariash, married by vurtue of a license from Mr Arnet 6th January 1741"
John's age at the time of his marriage implies that his birth must have occurred between 12th December 1709 and 10th December 1710.
In my original transcription of Sandal Magna, I thought that John was baptised as the son of John Townend on 20th December 1710. But on a clearer copy, the date is clearer and his father's name is more clearly readable as Jeremiah.
John was aged 87 at the time of his death in Manchester (of "old age") on 12th June 1796 (NOTE: he may have been buried on 17th rather than 16th June 1796) This implies that he was born some time between 13th June 1709 and 11th June 1710
Together, these would imply that he was born between Dec 1709 and June 1710
(NOTE: there was a John Townend who married an Elizabeth Rishworth in 1740, but this John was probably the son of a William Townend born in 1713 and Elizabeth was probably the daughter of John Rishworth and born in 1714, so the dates do not tally as well)
The baptism of John the son of Jeremiah in Sandal Magna was dated 28 December 1710, so this is not a perfect match, but is probably close enough to be correct, because although he was baptised on the 28th December, he could well have been born before the 11th December. At the time of his death in 1796, he would actually only have been aged 85.
The only rather odd thing is that Jeremiah Townend left money to John's son William, actually his fourth son, but he would have been the youngest at the time (ie 1752).
The family bible of son-in-law William Sykes confirms the origins of this family in Rothwell, so the couple must have moved from Sandal Magna to Rothwell some time between 1741 and 1743. The is a document relating to some property in Rothwell which involved Elizaberth's elder sister Mary
In 1743, Thomas was baptised from a place called "Hall flat". The later children were baptised from Middleton (or Middleton Liberty) In the Rothwell churchwarden's accounts John Townend is shown as having been a churchwarden, contributing the following amounts "out of purse" for these years: 1743: 12s 01/2d 1744: £1 15s 6 1/2d
When they moved to Manchester, John and Elizabeth lived at Oldham Street in Manchester, presumably No 17. |

| In the parish baptism record, Mary's father is shown as John. But the burial record shows Jeremiah. Married John Harrison by license. |

| James and Joseph witnessed several marriages at Hemsworth and were presumably churchwardens. No marriage record found, but lots of children recorded at Hemsworth between 1748 (a bit early!) to 1779. In the case of the last, James is referred to as a butcher. For all others he was a farmer or husbandman. In some cases, the name is shown as Townsend rather than Townend but one should not read too much into this. |

| James and Joseph witnessed several marriages at Hemsworth and were presumably churchwardens. Wife Sarah was probably (not yet checked) the sister of William Clarkson, the husband of Joseph's sister Martha. Marriage license witnessed by John Skipton and John Cooke. |

| | The burial record just refers to Mary Townend a widow, but this was probably Jeremiah's wife. His will certainly shows that she outlived him. |
