weaver

From David Ballance . . . .

Samuel Heudebourg (born 1670) married Anne Lendre, the daughter of Thomas and Margueritte Lendre, in about the year 1690. They had at least five children.

In 1713 they were living in White's Row, Spitalfields , where he paid sewer rate. He was buried at St Dunstan's on 18 October 1724, but died intestate, and I do not know what happened to his wife.

Their last child, Ezekiel, a replacement for an earlier infant death, was baptised at Threadneedle Street on 14 November 1697, and apprenticed to his father as a weaver on 8 February 1713 o.s., but he never took up his Freedom of the Company. On 5 July 1722, he married at St Dunstan's Elizabeth Martin, the daughter of Henry Martin, a Brick Lane weaver; she was probably born in 1699.

Up to this point, the Heudebourcks had worshipped in the French churches, but the next generation had become anglicised enough for their children to be baptised in St Dunstan's or other local churches.

Of their other children, Thomas Heudebourg, born in London, February 7, 1692, and named for his maternal grandfather Thomas Lendre, is believed to have been the ancestor of the American Hudiburgs, and the grandfather or the great grandfather of Thomas Hudiburgh, born in 1763 in Colonial America.

The Heudebourgs have left many descendants in England as well as in the United States. Probably the most famous of them is the modern English writer, Walter de la Mare (1873-1956), whose ancestors, Pierre de Lamere and Magdelaine Heudebourg (born 1658), were married in Canterbury Cathedral, in 1683. In present-day London the family name is spelled Heudebourck or Heudeburck.
