| The parents of Thomas Jones are not known for certain, but we know when he was born . . .
"Thomas Jones, Gentleman of High Street Inferior ward, was buried on 17th June 1820, aged 78".
His age at the time of his burial would imply that he must have been born at some time between late June 1741 and early June 1742. Although the baptism date for Thomas the son of William (corvisor) and Mary was 14th March 1741, it must be remembered that this is an "old style" date, so is "really" the 14th March 1742 and therefore falls within the required range.
However, he might just as easily have been the Thomas Jones who was born the son of Benjamin Jones (who was a taylor) and Jane of Morgancy (Morgannock?) ward and baptised on 9 August 1741, also at St Mary's Brecon. Benjamin and Jane Jones had other children, namely David (bp 15 Jul 1739), John (bp 16 August 1747 ) and Benjamin (bp 31 Dec 1749). And it is possible that Jane was the second wife of Benjamin Jones, he having been previously married to Lucy, because Lucy the daughter of Benjamin Jones (Taylor) and Lucy was baptised in Brecon on 6th July 1737. But there is no death record for a Lucy Jones between 1737 and 1739. Perhaps this was a misprint and the mother really was Jane.
Thomas might even have been the son of a Meredith Jones, who was variously described as a "stranger", "exciseman" and "schoolmaster" and his wife Margaret. This Thomas Jones was baptised at St Mary's Brecon on 15th May 1741, so strictly speaking this would have made him aged just 79 at the time of his death.
Finally, there is another possible baptism to consider, namely that to John Jones (another corvisor) and Ann, on May 20 1743. But this would actually have made him aged only 77 by June 1820.
Unfortunately, Thomas failed to name any of his sons William, Benjamin or Meredith, as might have been expected if his father had one of these names, so this does not help to identify his parents.
I cannot yet find any wills of William, Meredith, Benjamin or John Jones at the NLW that could have helped to resolve this (nor any other appropriate Jones wills for that matter)
It is I am sure pertinent to note that the bondsman to the 1779 marriage license between Thomas Jones and Sybil Baskerville was a William Jones, innkeeper of Brecon. In 1791, the will of a William Jones of Glasbury was administered by Ann Jones widow of Glasbury (presumably she was William's wife). The two witnesses to this administration were Thomas and William Jones, whose signatures on the administration document were absolutely identical to those on Thomas and Sybil's marriage licences. This suggests to me that Thomas and William were probably brothers. None of my above proposed possible parents of Thomas Jones had a son called William, so there may actually have come from elsewhere such as Glasbury. Could William and Ann of Glasbury have been their parents?
A former correspondent of mine (Nicholas Royal) believed that Thomas Jones was apprenticed to a William Keen in Newport in 1753, but I'm not sure where he obtained this information. Thomas would only have been aged 11 or 12 at the time. But it is certainly quite possible that he was born in Monmouthshire, because his first wife Mary Bagehott is believed to have come from Abergavenny, although her baptism was not recorded at St Mary's Abergavenny (oddly enough the 3 sons had their births recorded but not their baptisms).
Thomas was a saddler from before 1775 (when he married Mary Baghott, although I believe that he may also have been a maltster at this time) until at least 1784, when his youngest daughter Elizabeth was born. However, in the 1787 will of George Morgan, his son George from his first marriage to Mary was said to have been the son of Thomas Jones, Maltster, so I conclude that he must have stopped being a saddler between 1784 and 1787.
In 1808, when his second wife Sybil died, he was described as being innkeeper at the Castle Hotel, Brecon, which is very near to the cathedral.
On 2nd November 1811 a Mr Thomas Jones of Brecon was fined for not providing a wagon for the Worcestershire militia. This was probably this Thomas Jones.
There was a marriage at Talgarth Church between a William Davies (of Llangenny) and a Catherine Jones and one of the winesses was a Thomas Jones. His signature seems to be identical to that on Thomas and Sybil's marriage license. This Catherine is believed to have been baptised the daughter of John Jones of Talgarth, so perhaps John Jones was another brother of Thomas (and William?) and Catherine was his neice. Talgarth is not so far from Glasbury, so perhaps he was another son of William and Ann. The only problem that I have with this is that William Jones gent and Ann (Proger) may have got married by license on December 9th 1765, much too late for them to have been the parents of Thomas, William and John Jones. (NOTE that there was a William Jones who married an Ann Jones at St David's Brecon on 28th May 1741)
Thomas was described as being a gentleman at the time of his death in 1820. |

| William's occupation, as shown in the baptism record of Thomas, was that of a corvisor (ie a type of shoemaker). However, the baptism date given for Thomas Jones is a little bit early for him to have been 78 at the time of his death in 1820, so this may not be correct
On 14th July 1745, there was a baptism record of a Jenett daughter of William Jones (shoemaker) and Margaret. This could be a different William, a second marriage or is misprint in the record. A misprint is unlikely, because there wasa also a daughter Mary baptised on 30th December 1750 and a Susan baptised on 30th December 1754. Margaret the wife of William Jones (shoemaker) was buried on 8th July 1769.
But there was another Margaret wife of William Jones shoemaker who was buried on 21st December 1786, so there here certainly two shoemakers called William Jones, both of whom married Margaret! On April 22 1743, a Richard Jones son of William Jones shoemake was buried at St John's.
On 27th April 1736 there was a baptism of Margaret the daughter if William Jones (corvisor) and Catherine Phillips, who had been married on 14th April 1735, Could this have been yet another corvisor called William Jones?
There is a burial record for a James son of William Jones (corvisor) buried of 17th September 1752
(NOTE: The burial record of a William Jones, shoemaker, on December 15 1808 showed his age to have been 46 (implying that he was born in 1762) so this was clearly not the William we are interested in) |
