Jonathan Wordsworth's will of 1678 . . . .
In the name of God Amen I Jonathan Wordsworth of {Pennistone} in the County of Yorke Grocer being sicke of body but of a good and perfect minde praised be Almighty God ******* I Doe make and ordaine this my last will and Testament in manner & forme Following First I Commit my soule into the handes of Almighty God whoe gave it me And my body I Com[m]itt to the earth to be buried by Christian buriall at the discrection of my Exector hereafter named And as for my wordly estate which God Almighty hath blessed me withall my will and minde is as Followeth Imprimis I doe give and bequeath unto John Golthorpe of Aynsley in the County of Nottingham and Sarah his wife my daughter all that Cottage or Tenement in Askamein the County of York with the Edifices buildings Lands and premisses to the same belonging to them and theire heires for ever Also I give unto them fifteene poundes to be paide either in money or the value of the money to be delivered in goods at the discretion of two sufficient men to be paide or delivered by my Executor within one year after my decease if they demand noe goodes left them by Sarah Headley the said Sarah my daughters Grandmother Item I give and bequeath unto my children Jonathan Wordsworth Richard Wordsworth William Wordsworth and Elizabeth Wordsworth my children unto every one of them the sum[m]e of thirty poundes of good and lawfull English money a piece to be paide by my Executor when they shall severally accomplish the age of twenty and one years And further I give and bequeath unto they the said Jonathan William and Elizabeth my said children unto every one of them tenn poundes a piece of like lawfull English money to be paide to every one of them by Elias Wordsworth my sonne and heire within one yeare after the decease of Margaret my wife if then she long lives Alsoe my will and minde is that my sonne Richard shall have tenn poundes by said Executor paide him which one Richard Headley his Grandfather left him by his will within one yearafter my decease Item to Margaret my wife I give and bequeath two Messuages two Messuages in ****** with the gardens and appurtenances to the same belonging for and duringe her naturall life if she stand not for her thirds of my estate and keepe my sonne William untill the age of fourteene yeares of age And if she doth not keepe my sonne William for the terme aforesaid Then I give and bequeath the Messuage that Sarah Bradford of Pontefract dwelleth in to Elias my sonne and his heires for ever Alsoe my will and minde is soe long as Margaret my wife liveth.unmarried that she shall dwell in the house I now live in and be mainetened with meate drincke and Cloathes at the ample Cost and Charges of my Executor he receiving the Rents as they become due and payable att Pontefract soe long as my said wife (liveth with my Executor) and the said Messuages at Pontefract aforesaid after my wives decease I give and bequeath unto Elias my sonne his heires & Assignes for ever Item my will and minde is that the two Messuages in Doncaster with the appurtenances which I had left by Henry Wordsworth of Doncaster gent should be sold by Josias Wordsworth of Waterhall Gent and William Beever of Thornfell in the parish of Pennistone yeoman for and towards the paying of my debts And by this my will and Testament doe give the said Messuages in Doncaster aforesaid to them the said Josias Wordsworth and William Beever theire heires & Assignes for ever but to the intent and onely proper use that they the said Josias and William Beever theire heires & Assignes may make sale of both the said Messuages for the paying of my debts And alsoe to pay my debts out of the said money And the overplus to be paide to my Executor deducting their reasonable expences and Charges And alsoe my will and minde is that Elias Wordsworth shall mainetaine keepe provide for my said Children (to wit) Jonathon William Richard and Elizabeth one yeares or otherwise be fit to be put to trade And I doe make Elias Wordsworth my sonne sole Executor of this my last will and Testament And they the said Josias and William Beever Supervisors of the same In Wittnesse whereof I have to this my last will and Testament set to with meate drincke education washing Cloathing and lodgeing untill they come to the age of twenty my hand and seale the eleaventh day of July Anno d[omi]ni 1678 Jonathon Wordsworth sealed and delivered in the presence of us Mary Greene her marke George Heliett Nathan Staniforth
