NOTE: A Thomas Proud (55) and Jane Proud(50) were living at Water Street, St Cuthbert, Carlisle at the tome of the 1841 census. His occupation was that of a cheese dealer. Their sons Thomas (20), William (20) and Joseph (15) were mentioned. It is not clear whether this was the correct Jane. The age discrepancies are not too serious but the occupations are awry.

Born at Slaggyford near Knarsdale

Widow Mary was the tenant of Heugh Mill until 1880, following the death of her son Thomas (in 1861 or possibly 1856), after which the tenancy passed to her son Anthony.

In the 1851 census, Mary was aged 56 and married to Thomas Robson (58), living on Countess Park with brother Anthony staying with them (55) and children George(34), Anthony (28), William (21), Jane (26) Mary (19 and a dressmaker) Catherine (16) and Ann (a scholar aged 14). There were two servants Edward Tate aged 26 (farm labourer) and Robert Douglas (35 from Ireland). All except George were unmarried at this time. The 3 sons and brother Anthony all workied with Thomas as timber merchants.

By the time of the 1861 census, Mary had been widowed, was aged 66 and described as being a farmer of 30 acres, having been born at Slaggyford, Northumberland. Still living with her were son William (now aged 30, unmarried and still a timber merchant), daughter Mary (now 29 and still a dressmaker) and grand-daughter Mary J. Graham aged 19 and unmarried. William, Mary and Mary J. Graham were all said to have been born in Chollerton rather than Kirkhough. There were two servants, namely John Noble a carter (35, married and from Cumberland) and house servant Margaret Robson (presumably no relation - aged 30 and from Bellingham).

Mary was still the head of the household in the 1871 census, living at Low Park. By then she was aged 75 and a farmer of 26 acres, having been born in Slaggyford. Her son William, a timber merchant aged 41, is now married but no wife is shown. Daughter Mary is aged 39 and unmarried - no occupation shown. The same birthplace is shown for William and Mary, but it looks like North Birtley. There were 4 servants recorded, namely William Lee (25 from Chesterwick (?),Northumberland), Walter Inglis(?) 24 from Scotland, John Philipson, 21 from Bellingham , Northumberland, and Elizaberth Buren(?) 18 from Walwick(?), Northumberland.
