The following are Quarter sessions that may relate to this Richard Wordsworth (I believe that John and Richard were the two eldest sons of Henry, who died in 1577. Henry's father John then died in 1584)

18/4/1598 John & Richard Wordsworth of Brookhouse forcibly entered house of Andrew Haigh of Carlcoats and took away a cow.

25/9/1598 John & Richard Wordsworth of Brookhouse plus Peter Marsden Turlstone, Willie Haigh and Richard Nicholls of Carlcoats went to Birdsedge and broke into the house of Willie Moorhouse.

Richard was bequeathed Brooke House in his father Henry's 1577 will, the house at the time still being occupied by Henry's parents John and Emot. After John died in 1584, Emot apparently moved to Carlcoates, possibly to live with her son John (probably the John Wordsworth of Allen House?).

I believe that John and Emot may also have had a son Richard, as he is mentioned in Emot's administration of 1588.

This is an attempt at a transcsription of Richard's will . . . .

In the name of God amen the twentieth(?) day of October 1623 I Richard Wordsworth of Brooke House in the diocese of York yeoman being sick in body but of perfect remembrance god be praised therefore do constitute ordain and make this my last will and testament in manner and form following: viz first and principally I commend my soul to Almighty god hoping assuredly that he will be merciful unto me and forgive me all my sins and ? the same to his mercy(?) for ? sake my alone and all sufficient(?) saviour and my body to the earth from whence it came and ? such worldly estate as god hath blessed me with all I give and devise as followeth. And first my will and mind is that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid out of my whole goods and that the residue thereof shall be divided into three equal parts, one part whereof I give to Sara my wife in lieu(?) and full satisfaction of her wife's right for all my goods and out of those(?) part I give unto my godchildren, namely to John Wordsworth, son of John Wordsworth of Carlecoats, Richard Charlesworth son of Godfrey of ? The remainder of the profits therepof according(?) the terms(?) aforesaid I will shall be employed for the increase(?) of the portions of my daughter and such child or children as my wife is or shall be with child with all at the said time of my death and also that my wife's third part thereof if she did before my expiry accomplish the age of twenty one years shall also be employed and bestowed towards the ? of the portions of the said Sara and such child or children as Sara my wife is now or shall be with child with all at the time of my death and also my will and mind is that after my said son Isaac shall have accomplished the said age of one and twenty years and after the death of Sara his mother, all my said lands and premises shall be to the ? ? use and ? of my said son Isaac and of the heirs of his body and for want of such issue to the heirs of my body and for want of such issue to my right(?) hereof(?) forebear(?) provided always that if my son Isaac die without heirs of his body that how(?) the profits of my lands appointed for the increase of the portions of my children as aforesaid shall be equally divided amongst such of my children as shall not be heirs of my lands to be equally divided amondt them and my will is that Sara my wife shall be tutor(?) of the bodies of my children and have the bringing(?) of them up till they come to their lawful age or marriage and have reasonable(?) allowance out of my lands towards their maintenance if they so long live and remain unmarried and the residue of the profits aforesaid to go then(?) with my children portion of goods as also the tuition(?) of the bodies of my children and the bringing of them up after the marriage or death of my wife shall ? to John Crossley(?) of ?, Ralph Wordsworth, son of John Wordsworth of Water Hall, Ralph Hawksworth son of Edward Hawksworth of Swindon(?) who my ? ? John Wordsworth of Carlecoates (This John Wordsworth is believed to have been born at Brokehowse Farm, near Langside, south of Penistone)

Quarter sessions
(NOTE: I believe that these were the two eldest sons of Henry, who was deceased by 1598, as was Henry's father John who died in 1584):

18/4/1598 John & Richard Wordsworth of Brookhouse forcibly entered house of Andrew Haigh of Carlcoats and took away a cow.

25/9/1598 John & Richard Wordsworth of Brookhouse plus Peter Marsden Turlstone, Willie Haigh and Richard Nicholls of Carlcoats went to Birdsedge and broke into the house of Willie Moorhouse.

Several documents connect Brokehowse (or Brook House) in Langside (Langsett) with Carlecoates. It would appear that John Wordsworth the younger of Carlecoates lived at Elcock House in Carlecoates (Elcock Farm still exists). The crucial piece of evidence is that mother Emot/Emote made her will from Carlcoates, which would tend to imply that at least one of her children lived there.

There is a document from 1622 that relates to a John Wordsworth of Allen House in Carlecoates. A John Wordsworth of Allen House died in 1606 (he is believed by me to have been the son of John and Emot Wordsworth), which would tend to suggest that this John had a son of the same name who was still alive in 1622.

I originally thought that the father of John Wordsworth junior of Brokehowse (in 1595) was John Wordsworth of Allen House. The 1623 will of Richard, John's elder brother, reveals that he was the godfather of John's eldest son John, the John whom I believe was later to live at Rodwood.

The big question is: Were the John Wordsworth who live at Allen House and the John Wordsworth who lived at Elcock House one and the same? The administration of John Wordsworth of Carlecoates was dated 17th October 1638 (fol 642 Doncaster) but the administrator was George Ibotson of Brookehouse, which would suggest that this was John the son of Henry (ie this John)

This is how I read the Latin . . .
Salvo iure etc exhibead inventarium 26 Octobris 1638

This is how I translated it . . . .
