| Although a baptism has not yet been found for Edward, he must have been the son of Edward Fletcher and Sarah Hedley. They already had a son whom they called Edward, but he had died in 1767. It would appear that there was a practice going back to at least 1674 of naming the eldest son Edward.
At the time of marriage by license to Eleanor Rutherford in 1804, Edward was living at "Stotfield Shire of Roxburgh, North Britain". I believe that this refers to a farm called Stotfield in the parish of Oxnam in Roxburghshire, Scotland, where his eldest son Edward was baptised in 1805. He was still there in 1814, the year when both his wife Eleanor and daughter Sarah were buried. At the time of his own death in 1816, he was aged 48 and still living at Stotfield. One of the witnesses to the marriage was Allan Fletcher, whom I believe to have been his brother, ie another son of Edward Fletcher and Sarah Hedley
Edward's age at death implies that he was born around 1768, but this record has not yet been found.
After his death, the surviving children from his marriage went to live at Cleugh Brae, where William died in 1822 and Catherine married in 1834. In his will, Edward's brother John describes the Edward and John Fletcher who were living with him as his nephews and "sons of my deceased brother Edward Fletcher" |

| John was living at Cleugh Brae at the time of the 1841 census. Living with him and were his sister Sarah and his two nephews Edward and John (sons of brother Edward) who were working on the farm . His age was shown as 75, but he should have been 71. His will was made in 1844 (1844/F5/1) as follows . . . . This is the last will and testament of John Fletcher, farmer, of Cleughbrae - Whereas I John Fletcher being of sound mind do hereby, on the day and date hereinafter mentioned, make my last will and testament, as follows; I devise and bequeath unto my two nephews, at present residing with me, the sons of my deceased brother Edward Fletcher, the whole of my property and effects, real and personal, under the following conditions, viz. that the said Edward Fletcher and Kpohn Fletcher shall pay out of my effects all my justr and lawful debts, and necessary funeral expenses; also, that my sister, Sarah Fletcher, shall receive out of the said estate during the term of her natural life, the sum of twenty pounds sterling per annum to be paid half yearly at the terms of Whitsunday and Martinmas, or at any other such term as may be agreed upon by the parties themselves. And I do herby appoint the following persons viz. John Patterson, butcher Bagraw, and John Forrest of Rooking to be the executorts of this my will, and I also give and bequeath to my executors above named all necessary expenses for and on account of the trouble they may have in the execution of this my will. | I have not found a baptism record for Allan, but he was aged 68 at time of death, so must have been born around 1771. He named his eldest son Edward, which seemed to have been standard practice, and John, Ann and Sarah were also family names (Sarah would have been his grandmother's name). He was living at Nether Houses when he died. Nether Houses is a farm very close to Evistones and Cleugh Brae. In 1804, Allan was a witness at the wedding of his brother Edward. |

| Not definitely the son of Edward and Sarah but, like Allan, he named his eldest son Edward, which seems to have been the practice in this family. He also had another son whom he called Allan, like his brother (see below).
I think that he must have been the Rodger(sic) Fletcher aged 65, who was working as a labourer in the town of Alnwick (Bailiffgate Street) at the time of the 1841 census. He does not appear in the 1851 census because he died early that year.
One reason for believing that this is the "correct" Roger is that a child living with him was called Allen Fletcher (aged 12, so born around 1829), which was the name of one of his brothers and was an uncommon name. Other Fletchers in the house were John (labourer aged 15), William (Cloggins(?) apprentice, also aged 15) and Sarah (aged 10), so presumably younger chidren of his. Unfortunately, family relationships were not shown in the 1841 census, nor was Roger's marital state. |

| Sarah was living at Cleugh Brae with brother John at the time of the 1841 census. Her age then was shown as 55, whereas she should really have been 60. She was a beneficiary in John's will, in which she was described as being his sister, to the extent of 20 pounds per annum, to be paid by John's nephews Edward and John out of his estate. At the 1851 census she was living as housekeeper with her unmarried nephew John (son of Edward) at Netherhouses, Troughend. She was still living, aged 80, at the time of the 1861 census, when she was still living, now as retired housekeeper, with her now married nephew John Fletcher of Netherhouses, Toughend |

| | Barbara was not definitely the daughter of Edward and Eleanor, and no baptism record has been found. But when she died in 1823 aged 38 she was living at Cleugh Brae. It is perhaps just as likely that she was John Fletcher's wife (if he ever married) although there is no such marriage listed in the IGI.. |

| Evixstones is practically next door to Cleugh Brae Sarah was aged 77 when she died in 1817, so must have been born around 1740. The IGI does not show a suitable baptism |
