| Gilbert was brought up in Milverton, near Taunton. At the time of the 1881 census, he (age 7) and his brother Geoffrey (age 6) were staying with the Cheasley family in Perriwinkle Street. According to his daughter Betty, he later lived in Finchley in a road ending in trees. I assume that this was 32 Woodside Park Road,
Gilbert sailed for Rangoon in Burma from Liverpool on 3rd September 1914 on the Worcestershire, according to shipping records at the National Archives
The following history comes from the Thomas Cook archives in Peterborough . . . .
1888 Entered service with Thomas Cook at Ludgate Circus in the Railway Accounts department 1892 Transferred to the Banking and Exchange (B&E) department 1893-4 Transferred to the Paris office 1895 Transferred to be in charge of the B&E in Naples 1897 Transferred to be in charge of the Banking Department, Rangoon 1903 Became Manager (agent) in Rangoon 1914 Appointed General Manager of India in Bombay 1923 Returned to England and was appointed Joint Assistant Manager 1929 Joint Assistant Manager, Thos Cook & Son Ltd (picture in 1929 staff magazine) 1933? retired
Gilbert returned to England in 1921 on leave. The family rented a house called Marsham Lodge in Gerrards Cross until 1933, a site which is now a housing estate. He was living there at the time of the death of his mother Margaret in Willian on 5th September 1925
On 18th June 1931 he was granted a patent for a money calculator (GB Patent GB350864). This consisted of a sliding card that allowed the conversion of various amounts of pounds, shillings and pence into seven other currencies - not so useful in today's volatile currency markets!
Gilbert's wife Olwen died on 25th February 1932 and he retired from Thomas Cook in 1933, when he was aged 60, and moved to Lucknor, Oxon with his sister ("Aunt Margaret"). I understand that he lost a lot of his money in the depression. He later moved to Debenham near Ipswich where he died. Photos in his house there show a number of items that Betty inherited, one of which "the black cupboard" came in very handy as a shoe cupboard in the back hall of Peter and Christine's house. He was buried with Olwen at St James Church, Gerrards Cross. |

| Margaret was a nursing sister with her friend Miss King. She never married and had no children of her own. At the time of the 1911 census, she was living in Lichfield (aged 34). There would appear to have been many Ballances in Lichfield at this time, but I am not aware of any connections with them. The photograph shown was taken at Ashley Comber, Porlock Weir around 1922, with Betty and Gilbert. I am assuming that this was her, but I cannot be certain. It wasa probably taken by Olwen Margaret was Betty's demon aunt, especially after she moved in with Gilbert and Betty in Lucknor and made her life a misery. I have inherited a book with her signature inside it (a rather low brow one!). She retired to Clevedon, where she died. |
