William and Mary Smart are the couple who figured in the guest-list at the Hackney wedding in David Descarrieres' journal. William was fairly certainly the son of that Thomas Smart whose marriage to Mary Gray in 1743 appears on the same page of the Bethnal Green Register as John Ballance's. He was elected to a Bank of England Clerkship on 11 March 1779, and worked first in the Cash Books Office, then in the Offices of the Cashier and the Chief Cashier, the last from 1808 to his death in 1816, by which time he was receiving the decent salary of 310 p.a.. |
