Will/Admon

John Wordsworth was "one of His Majesty's coroners for the county of York

In 1721, John was bequeathed a farm and land in Cumberworth in the parish of Silkstone in his father's will. He was already living there by this time. Also mentioned in his father's will were his 4 daughters, all of whom were born before 1721. His grandfather Josias was said to have been "of Cumberworth and Walton Hall", where he died in 1670. This probably explains why John had moved to Sandal Magna by 1729. John still had land interests in Nether Cumberworth as late as 1743

THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS ARE LOCATED AT THE WAKEFIELD DEEDS REGISTRY

John's will was made in 1757, just before he died, and the original is at the John Goodchild collection in Wakefield. This will was apparently not proved. Note that the two references to sons John Townend and John Wordsworth effectively prove that he was indeed the father of the Elizabeth Wordsworth who married John Townend in 1741, despite the small discrepancy in her age at marriage and death.

"In the name of God amen, I John Wordsworth of Walton in the parish of Sandal Magna in the county of York, Gentleman, being sick in body but of a perfect sound and disposing(?) memory (praised be God for the same) yet considering the certainty of my death but the uncertainty of the time thereof, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following: First my will and mind is that all my debts, funeral expenses and charges of proving this my will shall be paid by my executrix hereinafter named. And as to such worldly estate with which it hath pleased God to bless me with, all I give and dispose thereof as follows (that is to say) I give and bequeath unto my sons John Townend and John Wordsworth in trust for my daughter Maria Wordsworth of Walton aforesaid, spinster, all and every my household goods and furniture ? plate and other my personal estate in whatsoever the same shall consist at the time of my decease and I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my said daughter Maria sole executrix of this my will hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of March in ther year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty seven.
Signed by John Wordsworth.
Signed sealed published and declared by the said testator John Wordsworth as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presencehave subscribed our names as witnesses to the due execution (the marks(?) my sons John Townend and John Wordsworth as ? for I being first in ?)
