This Christopher Wannop was referred to as " junior" when he married in 1742, so his own father must also have been called Christopher Wannop. As we was aged 25 at the time, he must have been born around 1717. His father was still alive in 1742
On possibility is that he was the Christopher baptised at Moorhouse (Wetheral) in 1715. Urlan Wannop reports that the register was unclear but could have read "Holmehouse"
There is a will of a Christopher Wannop of Newby (and whose wife's name was Margaret) that was made on 7th February 1763 and proved on 26th February 1763. It mentions essentially all of his surviving children, so this must surely be the correct Christopher. Of his believed 16 children Nathanial and Sarah died young, so would not have been mentioned. The only ones not mentioned were Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine, . The last two are known to have died in 1761. Most children received twenty pounds, or a share in land, but Thomas only got one guinea. Perhaps he had already been catered for. The older Christopher, who also died young, was presumably from this marriage as he was born in 1742, ie before the other Christopher Wannop married Isabel Atkinson in 1744. The question is: were Elizabeth, Mary and Catherine from this marriage. It is possible that they were children of Christopher and Isabel Atkinson, who also lived in Irthington I believe.

PS an explanation for the change for Christopher Wannop. . . .
According to Urlan Wannop, it was this Christopher who was described as a yeoman when he died at Hillfield in 1768 aged 56. This would imply that he must have been born around 1712. Urlan also states that he left a will mentioning his wife Isabel and brothers William (of Lowhouse), Thomas (of Hallflat) and Nathan (presumably of Hillfield). This implies that Isabel was sill alive in 1768. I had originally thought that it was this Christopher Wannop who was the one, described as a bachelor , who married Isabel Atkinson in Brampton on 2nd June 1744. But I am no longer sure about this, because I believe that the mother of all of his children outlived him and that he actually died 5 years earlier. There were a large number of children baptised at Irthington to Christopher Wannop, two of them before this marriage date. |
