| Samuel was baptised an Paul St Independent, Taunton
In the 1841 census, Samuel is reported to have been living in the High Street, St Mary Magdelene in Taunton, aged 33 and a builder. He was married to Caroline (aged 30) with 4 children, Caroline aged 8, Mary aged 7, Phoebe aged 4, George aged 2 and Emily aged 3 months. They had two servants, Ann Hammett aged 25 ( born in Somerset) and Ann Harris aged 18 (not born in Somerset).
When his daughter Margaret Luke was born in 1844 in High Street, Taunton, Samuel's occupation was still shown to be that of a builder. But in 1848 the building partnership with his brother George Pollard was dissolved, so he was presumably changing his career at this time.
By 1853 he was selling a large number of trees, aimed at the Navy, and was by this time described as being a Surveyor.
According to the Bridgwater Times of 10th January 1856 Samuel Pollard had his lead stolen in Taunton
In the 1861 census he is described as living in Middle Street and working as an Architect and Surveyor aged 53 with his wife Caroline aged 50. Living with them were Mary Eliza (26), Margaret Luke (17), Emily (13 and at school), Elizabeth Dymond (aged 11 at school). Ann Hammett was the cook aged 23 (daughter of the previous Ann?) and Elizabeth Palfrey aged 25 the housemaid.
In 1863 Samuel was selling a large building together with a steam engine and water wheels,
In 1869, when his daughter Margaret Luke was born, he was living at Melville House, Taunton.
His two eldest children were both baptised on Christmas Day
From David Ballance . . . .
At 21, Samuel was already established in business in High Street as an auctioneer and valuer. In his long career at Taunton he also appears as an architect and surveyor. No doubt he was all these, although, apart from the North Street Chapel and the Elmore Chapel at Tiverton, I have not found any buildings for which he was responsible. He was obviously a man of considerable drive. He married Caroline Heudebourck in 1832, and twelve years later his brother married her sister Phoebe. |

In 1851, she was still unmarried aged 40 and living in the High Street, Taunton, next door to her brother George and his family. She had a servant called Mary Ann Dew. There was an uninhabited house on the other side. |

| Mary's age in the 1841 census was given as 60, but the ages in this census are often inaccurate. Living with her at the time were her unmarried daughter Elizabeth Pollard (age 30) and her son George Pollard (aged 20). There was a 15 year old servant in the house, called Hannah Poole.
On her death certificate in December 1850, Mary was described as being the widow of George Pollard, builder, and her age was shown to have been 76, implying that she was born in 1774 (or in the very last few days of 1773). She died of a diseased heart and "dropsy". Her son George was present at her death in High Street, Taunton.
I cannot yet find a baptism for a Mary Knight in the Taunton region that falls within this time range, but I have 3 possibles as follows:
Mary the daughter of William and Mary Knight baptised at Fitzhead on 14th February 1773 Mary the daughter of William and Elizabeth Knight baptised at Stogumber on 26th March 1775 Mary the daughter of John and Sarah Knight baptised at Kingston St Mary on 5th December 1775
from David Ballance .....
The origins of George's wife, Mary Knight, are uncertain. Unfortunately, she died in 1850, a year before the Census would have revealed her birthplace. From the 1841 Census, we know only that she was born in Somerset. Knight is a common name around Taunton today, four times as common as Pollard. Her parents may have been the Richard and Hannah Knight who signed the Register, but I have not found their marriage or her baptism. If she was a dissenter, as is probable, she could have been baptised by the Minister of one of the small congregations whose records have perished; she was born between December 1773 and December 1774. The surname is frequent in the records of Paul's Meeting, and in the parish records of West Monkton and Pitminster, but no entry seems directly relevant to her. There is no help to be had from the Land Tax or the Rating books. As her eldest son was called Samuel, it is of interest that a Samuel Knight was buried at West Monkton on the 25 July after her marriage, though no age is given. |
