Arthur was born at Longlands farm in Kingwater, where his father Thomas Wannop farmed.

His memorial inscription at Walton churchyard includes other family members as follows. . .

"JANE DAUGHTER OF ARTHUR AND ELIZABETH WANNOP OF WALTON HIGH-RIGG WHO DIED JAN 1st 1852 AGED 7 YEARS MARY THEIR DAUGHTER DIED APRIL 1st 1861 AGED 35 YEARS
ALSO OF THE ABOVE ELIZABETH WANNOP WHO DIED AT WHITE HILL JANy 4th 1876 AGED 75 YEARS ALSO OF WILLIAM THEIR SON WHO DIED JANy 20th 1877 AGED 44 YEARS ALSO OF THE ABOVE ARTHUR WANNOP WHO DIED AT WHITE HILL JUNE 2nd 1882 IN HIS 82nd YEAR ALSO OF CHRISTOPHER THEIR YOUNGEST SON WHO DIED AT BRAMPTON FEB 16th 1886 AGED 37 YEARS"

By the time of the 1841 census, he had moved from Longlands to Walton High Rigg and had three servants in the household

Arthur Wannop owned and occupied land as follows in the Walton area in 1843, according to a tithe map of that date:
Plot 61 - Manston Rigg lands
Plot 68 - Hillfield House and lands
He occupied the following pieces of land owned by Lowry Calvert:
Plot 67 - High Rigg House and Lands
Townend Croft

At time of 1851 census Arthur was shown as farming 180 acres at Walton High Rigg

He was a Poor Law Commissioner in 1854 - of Walton Rigg.
At the time of the 1861 census he was still living at Walton High Rigg, where he now farmed 136 acres, employing 1 labourer.

Arthur was the census enumerator for Walton in 1861. It appears that he was poorly briefed (or did not understand the instructions) as all were originally entered as males, and females had subsequently to be entered in the correct column.

On March 8th 1864 he advertised the services of his bull (Heather Jock) to serve coes for 5 shillings a time.

At the time of the 1881 census, Arthur was a widower aged 80 (his wife having died in 1876) and he is again shown as having been born at Longlands, Kingwater in Cumberland. He was described as being a farmer of 40 acres. Living with him was his widowed daughter Margaret Mounsey (aged 39 and shown as housekeeper and born at Walton Rigg) and her 4 children.

Thomas (of Longlands in the parish of Lanercost) made his will on 14th August 1872 and was probably a single man, as there was no mention of wife or children.

Thomas owned and occupied Plot 69 - Whitehill House in 1843, according to a tithe map of that date. This must have been this Thomas, because his father had died the previous year.

Thomas was buried at Lanercost in 1883 aged 77

The niece Jane Wannop may have been the daughter of Arthur, but there were probably other nieces called Jane. One of his sisters (presumably Ann) married a Mr Noble and had a daughter Elizabeth.

This is the last will and testament of me Thomas Wannop of Longlands in the parish of Lanercost in the county of Cumberland yeoman. I give and bequeath all my household goods and furniture to my sister Eleanor during her life an annuity of twenty pounds. I give and bequeath to my niece Jane Wannop the legacy or sum of one hundred and fifty pounds. I give and bequeath to my niece Elizabeth Noble the legacy or sum of fifty pounds. And I do hereby charge and make chargeable all my real estate hereinafter devised with the payment of the said annuity and legacies and which said legacies I direct shall be paid at the expiration of twelve calendar months after my decease. I give and bequeath all the rest and residue of my personal estate and I give and devise all my real estate whatsoever and wheresoever unto my brother nathan absolutely. I appoint my said brother Nathan sole executor of this my will and do hereby revoke all other testamentary writings. In witness whereof I have hereunder set my hand the fourteenth day of August one thousand eight hundred and seventy two. Signed and declared by the said Thomas Wannop as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who being both as present together at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.

... from the late Mr Nathan Wannop of Longlands, who died in 1892 in his 82nd year — Our learned master! Boldly at this time We do rebel; we know the total crime; An ancient custom held throughout the nation, Where scholars used it for their recreation. So since it has an ancient custom been We are more bold to persevere therein That we demand you shall none of us beat Neither with your hands nor with your feet. Till Christmas be past ; at which blest tide We mean from school two weeks to abide For to fight cocks and capons . . . . . . . Unfortunately Mr Wannop could not recall the re- maining verses. His memory must have been very good to enable him to repeat as much as he did; for nearly sixty years have passed since scholar's how- ever bold, could dare to announce their intention to indulge in the sport of cockfighting, which was made illegal in 1835. Let us also hope that as many years have passed since there was any need for scholars to stipulate that their master should not inflict corporal punishment with his feet! It must have been in spite of, and not because of, such a mode of discip- line, that any scholar could develop into so admir- able a specimen of manhood as the late Mr Nathan Wannop.
