| In the 1851 census, John was aged 8 and was living with parents and half-brother Robert Jones in Market Street, Llanrhaiadr ym Mochnant. In the 1861 census he was aged 18 and both he and Robert were in a lodging house at 109 Bury New Road, Cheetham, Manchester. His occupation was shown as that of a clerk in a warehouse in Manchester. In the 1871 census he was aged 28 and was living with the family of his half brother Robert at 3 Rivington ?? Street, Stretford. His occupation was given as cashier in a warehouse.
In 1875 John married Mary Esther Southworth at the Congregational Church according to the rites and ceremonies of the Congregational dissenters. At this time, he was livingh at No 1 Longford View, Parker Street, Stretford. Harold Alfred Southworth, Mary's eldest brother, was one of the witnesses. The other was a Jane S Jones. Mary's father James was deceased by then. I wonder how they met? In 1881 he was aged 38 living in Street Lane, Mosely Park in Cheadle, Stockport. His occupation was given as Commercial Clerk, Home Trade and he was now married to Mary Esther Southworth, from Cheshire, Edgeley (crossed out and changed to Cheadle), with children Llewelyn (4), Idwall Jeffrey (3) and Harold Rhys (1). Their domestic servants were Ann Mayer (29) from Bramhall, Cheshire and Jane Elizabeth Davis, who was only 16 and came from Llanrhaiadr
In 1891 census he was described as being a cashier aged 48, with his birth place given just as Montgomeryshire, rather than Llanrhaiadr ym Mochnant. He was living at Claremont (in Hulme Hall Road?), Cheadle Hulme, Stockport with 2 servants, Annie Mayer, now aged 40, and Emma Yarwood aged 26 from Brereton, Cheshire. Idwal Jeffrey is now 13, Harold Rhys is 11, Olwen Marion is 9, Alan Hubert is 7. Presumably Llewelyn, who would have been aged 14, was away at boarding school by this time. John's occupation was again shown as being that of a cashier.
On 30th June 1894, Claremont, which John was renting as a yearly tenant for 75 pounds, was described as to be auctioned on 18th July 1894, as described in the Lancashire General Advertiser. One must assume that he must have then bought it freehold this at auction. It occupied a site of 3,820 square yards.
In 1897 he was joint executor of the 200,000 pound will of Mr Thomas Collier of Ashfield and was bequeathed 100 pounds. Thomas must presumably have been the owner of Thomas Collier and Co. (Limited) of High Street, Manchester, the company where John worked as cashier.
When his son went to King William's College in 1899, John was described as being a Cashier and Secretary,
He was aged 58 in 1901 census and the family were living at Claremont, Hulme Road. His occupation was now shown to be "Director and Manager of Painting House". Wife Mary Esther was also Manager. They had a cook (Alice Brown, 24) anf a housemaid (Helen Caldercount?, 26).
In 1902, when his son Idwal was awarded the Bhaunagar medal, according the the Manchester Evening News, John still worked for Messrs Thomas Collier and Company Limited, Manchester.
He was aged 68 in the 1911 census, still living at Claremont after having been married for 35 years, and was a Director of a Limited Company (home and export market, described as being a General Merchants) having been born in Llanrhaiadr, Montgomery. Living with him was his wife Mary Esther, son Harold Rhys and two daughters Olwen Marian and Helen Myfanwy. Edith Willis (35) was visiting - she was born in London and was a teacher at Manchester High School for girls. They had two servants in the household, Nellie Elizabeth Buxton (cook 22) and Isabel Haycocks (housemaid 20)
On his wife's death certificate, John's occupation was shown to be that of a "shipping merchant" John's death was registered on 28th September 1925. Present at the death was his son, Llewelyn Southworth Lloyd, whose address was North Park, Gerrards Cross, Bucks. John's death certificate gives his age as 82 and his occupation as Merchant (retired). His address at the time of his death was 66 Hulme Hall Road in Cheadle Hulme. The cause of death was (1) Arterosclerosis (2) Cerebral Emboli
